• Sam arrives for a job interview. They’re nervous, as they have to get this job. Sam can either be (he)or(she). You will come up with a story that builds on this prompt.
1. While you are only writing one page, you will have to think through what this whole story will be to know how to begin.
2. You must also think about what genre of story this is, as writing for a thriller will be different than writing for a comedy or slice-of-life film.
3. You must also think about Sam’s motivations – why do they need this job? What type of job is this? What does this need to say about what else is happening in their life and what the broader story will be? Is there a difference between needing this particular job and wanting this particular job?
4. Your script must include:
• Scene headings
• Narrative description
• Dialogue
• The use of either O.S. (off-screen) or V.O. (voice-over).
• Proper character descriptions and stylization for the first mention.
• Sam and at least one other named character, introduced in all capital letters.
• At least two sound effects.
• Visual language that shows and doesn’t tell.

SAM, a 25-year-old woman, sits nervously in the waiting room of a prestigious law firm. She fidgets with her resume and looks at her watch, realizing she’s still ten minutes early.
SAM (V.O.) (whispering to herself) Come on, Sam, you’ve got this.
She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, trying to calm her nerves. Suddenly, she hears the sound of high heels approaching and opens her eyes to see the intimidating figure of SARAH, the firm’s HR manager.
SARAH (smiling) Sam, right? Follow me.
Sam gathers her things and follows Sarah down a hallway to a conference room.
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY
Sam enters to see three people sitting at the opposite end of the long table: KATIE, the hiring manager, and two attorneys, MIKE and JESSICA.
KATIE (taking a look at Sam’s resume) So, Sam, tell us a little about yourself.
Sam takes a deep breath and begins to speak, answering their questions with confidence.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM – LATER
The interview is almost over, and Sam is feeling good. She has impressed the interviewers with her experience and knowledge of the law.
JESSICA (smiling) Sam, you seem like a great fit for our team. We’ll be in touch soon.
SAM (overjoyed) Thank you so much.
CUT TO:
INT. WAITING ROOM – DAY
Sam exits the conference room and walks back to the waiting room. Suddenly, she hears her phone ringing in her purse. She panics and rushes to answer it.
SAM (answering) Hello?
CALLER (O.S.) Hey, it’s your landlord. I need to talk to you about your rent.
Sam’s heart drops. She realizes that if she doesn’t get this job, she won’t be able to pay rent.
CUT TO:
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM – LATER
The interviewers deliberate and finally reach a decision.
KATIE (smiling) Sam, we would like to offer you the position.
Sam can’t believe it. She thanks them profusely, feeling a huge weight lifted off her shoulders.
CUT TO:
INT. WAITING ROOM – DAY
As Sam walks out of the building, she takes a deep breath of relief. Suddenly, her phone vibrates in her pocket. She takes it out to see a notification from her bank: her rent has been paid.
SAM (V.O.) (smiling) Looks like things are finally starting to look up.
FADE OUT.
