ASSIGNMENT INTRODUCTION
Background: We like art when it means something to us. It might reflect an experience we relate to or touch us emotionally. In chapter 6 of your textbook, the authors discussed the ways that art connects to our lives. It may appeal to us in aesthetic ways (6.3) or as an expression of our philosophy, politics, religion, or even a personal expression (6.4). Art can serve to unify us or exclude others by demonstrating how people are alike or different (6.3). Artists can communicate with others through their work (6.4). Some artists use their artwork as a form of protest or shock, expressing sentiments that others agree with (6.7) and others use art to celebrate or commemorate significant events in society or their personal lives (6.8). Art can be an expression of religion (6.9) or a source of information, education, and inspiration (6.10).
Purpose: This assignment will help you examine the reasons you like a certain piece of art. It will encourage you to look more closely at a work of art and what that artwork says to you. This assignment will guide you to apply the concepts and vocabulary in the textbook, and will also strengthen your oral presentation and synthesis skills.
Task:
•choose a painting from a museum collection online
Make sure to identify the work of art by title and artist, and include a photograph (a screenshot will do) so that other students will know what you are writing about.
•Reflecting on the textbook’s explanations of how art relates to people, thoroughly explain in writing how and why this painting relates to you on a personal level. Make sure you are very thoughtful about your answer.
•Support your answer by defining and explaining the way(s) you connect to the work – through protest/shock, unification/exclusion, communication, celebration/commemoration, worship, information/education/inspiration, or expression. Avoid relying on aesthetics (i.e., it’s pretty, I like it) in explaining your connection to the work.
•Utilize the Key Terms where possible (words in bold and defined in the key terms section at the end of the chapter).
Grading Criteria:
•Your thoughtful and original post and responses. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Try not to repeat what others have written in your responses.
•Your writing is clear, and your post should thoroughly cover the criteria listed above and provide effective descriptions.
•Your ability to analyze how your chosen artwork appeals to you.
•The depth of your discussion and your use of the Key Terms.
HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT ( EXAMPLE ESSAY/ DRAFT)
For this assignment, I have chosen the painting “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali, which is part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.
When I first saw this painting, I was immediately drawn to it because of its surreal and dreamlike qualities. As I reflect on the ways that art connects to our lives, I find that this painting relates to me on a personal level in a few different ways.
Firstly, I connect with this painting through its expression of personal philosophy. The melted clocks in the painting suggest the fluidity and subjectivity of time, which resonates with my own belief that time is a human construct and that the moments we cherish are the ones that matter most, rather than the passage of hours and minutes.
Furthermore, I find that this painting serves to unify and communicate with others. While the surreal imagery may seem strange and even unsettling at first, it also prompts conversation and reflection among viewers. As an artist, Dali was able to convey his unique perspective and ideas through this work, which can be interpreted and understood by others in their way.
Finally, I appreciate how this painting serves as a source of inspiration and education. The surrealism movement, of which Dali was a part, challenged traditional artistic conventions and paved the way for new forms of expression in art. In this way, “The Persistence of Memory” inspires me to think outside the box and explore new and unconventional ideas in my creative pursuits.
In conclusion, “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali resonates with me on a personal level due to its expression of personal philosophy, its ability to unify and communicate with others, and its status as a source of inspiration and education. Through this painting, Dali has demonstrated how art can connect with our lives and prompt us to think critically about the world around us.
