As a member of Sigma Fraternity, I have had the privilege of learning about the incredible achievements and impact that many of our brothers have had on society. In this essay, I will highlight five notable Sigmas who have left a lasting impact in their respective fields and communities.
The first Sigma I would like to mention is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist, and leader in the African American community. His unwavering commitment to justice and equality inspired millions around the world and continues to do so today. What stands out about Dr. King is his ability to bring people together through his speeches and actions, despite the immense challenges he faced.
The second Sigma I would like to mention is Tommie Smith, a track and field athlete who won a gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 200-meter race. He is most famous for his iconic protest on the medal stand, where he raised his fist in the air in solidarity with the Black Power movement. His bravery in using his platform to fight for social justice is inspiring and demonstrates his strong convictions.
Next, I would like to highlight Harry Belafonte, a singer, actor, and social justice activist. Throughout his long career, Belafonte has used his voice to raise awareness about important social and political issues, including civil rights and the fight against apartheid in South Africa. He has also used his resources and influence to support numerous causes and organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people in need.
The fourth Sigma I would like to mention is Vernon Jordan, a prominent civil rights activist, and lawyer. Throughout his career, Jordan has worked tirelessly to advance the cause of equality and social justice, particularly for African Americans. He has served as a powerful voice for marginalized communities and has helped to open doors of opportunity for countless individuals.
Finally, I would like to mention the late Maya Angelou, a celebrated poet, writer, and civil rights activist. Her powerful words and impactful work have touched the lives of countless people and continue to inspire and motivate new generations. Angelou’s legacy as a powerful voice for justice and equality will endure for many years to come.
These five Sigmas represent just a few of the many brothers who have made significant contributions to society. Each one of them stands out for its unique traits and accomplishments, and each one of them continues to inspire me and countless others. Their connection to me as a Sigma is a source of pride and motivation to continue the work of advancing social justice and equality.
