Primary Source Annotation Discussion Board
Directions
Annotating sources helps us engage in close and active reading, which lets us better understand what a text is saying and what it means. Annotating primary sources is useful because these types of sources are complex. They were written by people in the past who lived in very different times and places, who had different values, and who spoke differently than we do today. You and your group members will all be annotating the same source and sharing your ideas about what it means. Only annotate the source assigned to your group.
Make sure to save your Google Doc as a PDF when you upload your work. Please do not use Pages, as Canvas cannot upload it. Use the Rich Text Editor or use Google Doc instead.
Students should complete the following steps:
Watch the how-to annotate for history video ? , which will walk you how to complete this assignment
Choose one of the primary sources to Annotate using the SQUARE method. Annotate in Word or Google Docs
Summarize key historical events and ideas – (put these in parentheses)
Put a Question mark ?? by ideas you do not understand or find confusing
Underline key words that seem important and explain why
Author’s assumptions and biases – highlight these
Your Reactions and interpretations – (put these in parentheses)
Identify and Explain the author’s main points/argument – bold these
Primary Sources: Choose one of the following PSs to annotate
The following sources focus on content from Module 1 Part 1.

Post your annotated primary source analysis to the Discussion Board two days before the module ends (hopefully before Sat) so your group members have a chance to reflect on your annotations. Submit it as an attachment (Word or PDF) so the formatting does not change. Simply click on the reply for the Discussion Board to submit your annotations. Do your best. We are all learning and it will take some time to get used to annotations. It does not have to be perfect. I am looking for effort, not perfection. Do not use Pages and convert your Google Doc into a PDF file.
Reflect on two of your classmates’ annotations and answer the following annotation reflection questions
What did your group members make note of?
How did their annotations help you better understand the source?
How were their annotations similar or different to yours?
Post your answers for the annotation reflection questions to the Discussion Board by the last day of the module.

part two
Please answer the following questions related to Module 1 part 1 and write 1 paragraph for each question (4 -6 sentences or 100 word count).
Do not use Pages, as my computer can not access that software. Use Google Docs, then save it as a PDF file, then upload the responses or share the Google Doc link. Or write the responses in the Rich Text Editor.
What did you find most interesting/thought-provoking/upsetting?
How does in this module connect to current events/issues?
How does this module connect to you? (this is not a literal question. think of gender roles, social media, movies, or own experience)
(Wikipedia is ok, as long as you cite it, the same with Chat GPT, cite it if you use it or any other app or website)
