Carefully review the cultural interview guidelines below and use them to structure your paper:
The main purpose of the interview is to discover, evaluate, and analyze cultural similarities and differences.
This assignment supports two different student learning outcomes (SLO) in this course:
SLO 1 – Develop cross-cultural sensitivity to interact with individuals from different business cultures.
SLO 2 – Analyze the cultural, legal, political, and economic forces of international business environment.
Your reflection summary should cover all major points listed below (in this order):
1. Identify and describe your own cultural background as the basis of cultural comparison.
a) Provide a brief introduction of how you met the interviewee and the interviewee’s demographic information, such as age, education, family, or occupation.
2. Describe BOTH similarities and differences between your own culture and her/his culture. Use the course concepts to guide your analysis (i.e. elements and dimensions of culture).
a) For example: similarities and differences can be in diet, attire, etiquette, government, education system, religion, family structure, etc.
3. Culture theory; briefly describe where your interviewee’s culture is situated on each of the six Hofstede cultural traits.

a) Power Distance (high versus low),
b) Individualism versus Collectivism (individualist versus collectivist),
c) Masculine versus Feminine**
(**Note the names on this cultural dimension usually misleads students, since they are outdated and mean something different than what most assume. Cultures with high ‘masculine’ scores tend to prefer achievement, ambition, power, and assertiveness over tender values such as quality of life and compassion for the weak. High scoring masculine cultures foster distinct and complementary gender roles. This means that men and women tend to have separate roles in society and are expected to differ. For instance, men are expected to be assertive, tough, and focus on material success, whereas women are expected to be modest and tender, and focus on improving the quality of life for the family. Cultures scoring highly ‘feminine’, gender roles are flexible. Men and women do not necessarily have separate roles, and they can switch their jobs while taking care of the family. Cultures with high feminine scores care more about quality of life, service, and nurturing family/community, and those values are embraced by both men and women in the society.)
d) Uncertainty Avoidance (high versus low),
e) Long-term Orientation, and
f) Indulgence versus Restraint.
Your interpretation/analysis of each dimension must start with Hofstede’s description of the concept (the theory).
Next you must incorporate your supporting evidence by linking the theory to your observations from your interview. This means that you will consider what your interviewee told you about her/his culture and see whether it aligns with what the theory describes.
Then do your own analysis after you have reflected on your interview experience.
Remember to run a comparison of your two countries using Hofstede’s data by running a comparison of the two countries (https://www.hofstede-insights.com/country-comparison/ Links to an external site.. and read what is written about how the cultures compare.
This section of your paper should be your summary analysis of similarities/differences:
Think about what your interviewee told you about her/his culture and and suggest how the interviewee’s culture is relatively lower or higher on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions compared to your own culture.
4. Finally, provide at least two recommendations for handling cultural differences and interacting with people of your interviewee’s culture at work or while conducting business.
The interview summary is for you to reflect on your dialogue with the interviewee.
The documentation of the dialogue is not required and is not graded.
The interview summary should be 1 – 2 pages, single-spaced, 12-font, free of major spelling/grammar mistakes, professionally formatted, and cover all questions.
